Doses used in human studies

Study Who took part Daily dose Length
Nature Metabolism, 2019 Healthy older adults 250, 500 and 1,000 mg Single dose and 4 weeks
JAMA Network Open, 2022 Adults aged 65–90 1,000 mg 4 months
Cell Reports Medicine, 2022 Adults aged 40–64 500 and 1,000 mg 4 months

In these studies, Urolithin A was well tolerated at all doses tested, with side effects similar to placebo. Read the full Urolithin A research guide for what each study found.

500 mg or 1,000 mg?

  • 500 mg is a widely used daily amount and was tested in middle-aged adults with positive results on muscle strength measures. It's a sensible starting point for most adults.
  • 1,000 mg was used in both 2022 studies. Some people choose the higher amount, but there's no strong evidence that more is always better.

If you're unsure, start with the labeled serving and talk to your healthcare professional about whether a different amount suits you.

Best time to take Urolithin A

There's no proven "best" time. What matters most is consistency. Practical tips:

  • Take it with a meal, which makes it easy to remember and is gentle on the stomach.
  • Choose a time you'll stick to, for example with breakfast.
  • If you take other supplements such as NMN, it's fine to take them at the same meal.

How long does it take to work?

Urolithin A works at a cellular level by supporting mitochondrial renewal, so it's not something you'll typically feel within days.* The human studies measured results after about 4 months of daily use. Plan to take it consistently for at least 2–3 months before judging how it fits your routine.

Can you take too much?

Human studies have tested up to 1,000 mg per day for 4 months without safety concerns. There's little reason to exceed the labeled serving or combine several Urolithin A products. Higher amounts add cost without proven extra benefit.
