Shilajit: Benefits, Research and How to Choose a Quality Supplement

Shilajit has been part of traditional Ayurvedic practice for centuries. Today it's one of the fastest-growing natural supplements. Here's what it is, what modern research has looked at, and how to choose a quality product.

What is shilajit?

Shilajit is a sticky, tar-like resin that seeps from rocks in high mountain ranges, most famously the Himalayas. It forms over long periods as plant matter breaks down under heat and pressure.

Its main active compound is fulvic acid, along with dibenzo-alpha-pyrones and a wide range of trace minerals. In Ayurveda it has traditionally been used as a rasayana, a tonic for energy and vitality.

What modern research has looked at

  • Energy and fatigue: In a 2019 study, active men who took purified shilajit for eight weeks kept more of their muscle strength after a fatiguing exercise test than those taking a placebo.*
  • Healthy hormone levels in men: A 90-day study in healthy men aged 45–55 found that purified shilajit supported healthy testosterone levels compared with placebo.*
  • Cellular energy: Early research suggests fulvic acid and dibenzo-alpha-pyrones may support mitochondrial function, the energy production inside your cells.*

The research is still small, and most studies used purified, standardized extracts. That's why quality matters so much.

How to choose a quality shilajit

  • Insist on testing. Raw shilajit can contain heavy metals and contaminants, so choose products that are purified and third-party tested.
  • Check the fulvic acid content. A stated fulvic acid percentage tells you more about potency than the word "pure."
  • Know where it's made. Look for products made in GMP certified facilities with clear labels.
